DIY Citronella Candles With Essential Oils

Hello friends!  Today I want to share with you a quick DIY on how to make your very own citronella infused candles using essential oils. Here in Colorado summer is in full swing!  That means pool time, barbecues, fun outside and of course those pesky mosquitoes!

These citronella candles are not only effective in helping keep the mosquitoes away but they are also very pleasing to the eye! As you know I’m a girl who likes to keep things pretty around here. So I decided to keep it pretty and practical at the same time.

DIY Citronella Candles with Essential Oils

Here is what you need for this project…

*Bag of lemons

*Bag of limes

*Either thyme or rosemary (I bought mine at Trader Joe’s)

*Essential Oils Citronella, Lemongrass, Grapefruit (I originally purchased mine in a 3 pack on Amazon for$16.99) 

*water

*Container of your choice (I used a large glass jar from Target, small jars from around my house, and an empty tea tin)

*Floating Candles

The Simple Steps

First, you need to gather all of the above supplies and choose which type of jar you will be using.

I collected different containers from all over my house!  This tea tin might be my favorite since it is unique! Don’t worry, I drank all the tea first! 🙂

Fresh Fruit and Herbs

Next, after collecting the containers , I simply sliced the lemons and limes and filled up my first glass jar with water and added the limes and rosemary.

These ingredients are simply for looks and add that pretty and rustic look that I love!  I ended up deciding to save the lemons and thyme for some of the smaller jars.

Once my jar was full enough to my liking (you can add as much or as little of filler that works for you), I added around 15 drops of the citronella oil.  

I used this many drops since my glass jar was rather large! I chose to then add 15 drops of grapefruit oil to compliment the citronella oil. It was a rather pleasing combination of scents.  

I would suggest adding as many drops as you feel necessary depending on the size of your container.  

Finally, I stirred the water a bit and added the floating candles!

That’s it! Can you believe it? It truly is a quick and simple DIY project that anyone can do!

Plus…they actually work! When I showed this to my friend she suggested it would be fun to have a girls night where we all brought our own containers but split the price of the oils and fillers! I thought this was a genius idea and sounded like a lot of fun!

There is so much oil in each little bottle that even if you were to split the cost of the bottles there would be plenty left over for other projects and for candles next summer! I might just have to host a candle party here soon! 😉

I did make several other candles to hand out to my neighbors. (Which I am told were AMAZING!) I varied these other jars by adding a combo of lemons and limes, thyme and rosemary and even some lemongrass oil which is also a mosquito repellent. It really is up to you what you add and what you find is visually appealing and what works for you!
