A Budget Friendly Linen Closet Makeover
Lately I have had the urge to purge and organize around our home. My first victim was our hall closet and it felt so good to get it organized. I was so pleased that I just had to share it with you all. So today’s post is all about how I did a budget friendly linen closet makeover with items I already had on hand.
I am so excited to share all of my simple tips and tricks with you.

A Budget Friendly Linen Closet Makeover
Friends, this linen closet makeover took me all of 30 minutes and I challenged myself to use items that I already had on hand.
You heard that right, 30 minutes!
I had to get a bit creative but the best part is that I spent $0!
Can I get an amen?!
The Before of Our Linen Closet Makeover
Below is the cringe worthy but very real BEFORE picture of our crazy and messy linen closet. This hall linen closet is located upstairs by all of our bedrooms and gets a lot of use! I promise it was organized at one point in time but like all of us life happens.
Organizing Your Linen Closet
Now for a few of my tips and tricks on how to complete a budget friendly linen closet makeover.
- Start fresh! Take everything out and start with an empty slate.
- Once you have taken everything out sort your things into three piles (keep, trash, and donate). Take the time to evaluate what items you really use and need. Remember to breathe because this part of the process can be overwhelming. But trust me, it feels so good at the end!
- Get Creative with storage containers and don’t be afraid to shop your house! As you can see in the picture below I reused several of the tubs I originally had in my closet.
This will help keep this makeover budget friendly! I also snagged a fun brown oval shaped woven basket from my storage closet. I love the texture it adds and it fits perfectly on my shelves. It’s pretty and functional …a win win combo in my book!
The smaller square baskets were from the dollar store and had been sitting above our washing machine unused for years. The cute blue and white ticking stripe baskets I found last year on clearance from Bed Bath and Beyond and were previously in my personal closet not being used. (I always have good intentions when I purchase storage items!)
Label, Label, Label
- Label with everyday items. I don’t know about you but keeping my sheets organized is always a nightmare! We have 4 different bed sizes in our home. So this time I simply grabbed some clothespins and a sharpie and wrote bed sizes on each pin. Then I clipped them to the corresponding tubs and instantly I felt better about the whole sheet situation.
- Finally, be ruthless and practical!
Remember, less is more and only put back in your linen closet the absolute necessities. For us that was sheets, toilet paper, extras of our favorite Sun Bum shampoo that we scored at 60% off on Black Friday 🙂 and of course our tub of medical items.
Loving Our Budget Friendly Linen Closet Makeover
After 30 minutes I was absolutely in love with our newly made over linen closet! I didn’t spend a dime and it felt so good to be organized. I have been showing it off to anyone who comes over!
It’s the little things, right?! Hopefully I have inspired you. Right after this I tackled the bedroom closet my two girls share. It was another great closet makeover that had an amazing before and after.
I seriously might be addicted to budget friendly closet organizing now.

Thank you Jennifer and good luck!
love how clean it is now, and i love the clothespin idea!
Thank you! Simple and quick!
30 minutes is impressive!
Right!? You know I have limited time;)
Wow! Looks fantastic for a quick project! Love the clothes pin idea also, keeping the sheets organized is the vein of my existence!! ha
Thank you and yes, mine too! The sheet situation is always ugly at our house. Hoping this quick fix changes that!
My friend this linen closet looks like an after thought by the builder, and yet you make it work! I learned from my mother-in-law early in my marriage you really only need three sets of sheets for each bed…..one being the set on the bed, one in the linen closet and one that’s waiting to be laundered! ha Recalling this I’ve greatly reduced the linens over the years because it all takes up space! There is something to be said to remove all contents and evaluate everything if it warrants going back in! I especially can appreciate your resourceful in how this was addressed too. Love the clothespin idea! No buying of containers/cloth bags – shop around the house you might say. I’m also a big fan of repurposing shoe boxes! Place a post it at the end of the box re contents and voila! I have used them for holding cards (Christmas cards/labels have their own box), and perhaps being a little anal and yet there’s shoe boxes for spring color ribbon, darker color ribbon, Christmas ribbon, sparkly ribbon, everyday gift bags, holiday gift bags, cellophane bags and you get the idea! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for stopping by Julie and I love your ideas too! Shoe boxes are indeed handy…I sometimes forget about those:) Shopping my home is always a must and one my husband appreciates! I love your three sheet idea…that’s how many we have and now I can justify that!Ha!
I loved all your ideas.
Thank you!
