When it comes to decorating around my house you can usually find a pretty book involved. I love decorating with books and wanted a new and fresh way to display them around my home. My wheels started spinning and from this came my fun and easy DIY book garland!
Jen of Noting Grace put together a fabulous DIY hop full of Spring inspiration. If you’re visiting here from Leslie at My 100 Year Old Home, welcome! Weren’t her DIY Spring placemats just awesome? I’m so happy you stopped by!
Fun and Easy DIY Book Garland
This might be one of my favorite DIYs because it was so easy yet had such an instant impact! Here is what you will need.

- books (the number depends on how long your garland is, I used 5)
- staple gun
- jute webbing 3 1/2 in. (you can choose from either a red or blue stripe)
Gather Your Supplies
Find some good books around your home or hit the thrift shops or flea markets if you need some new ones. You can usually find me scouring the local flea markets on Fridays. 😉 The 5 books I used were all flea market finds and were under $20 total. I love how colorful they are and figured it was a good investment because I would be using them all over the house eventually. The jute webbing I picked up at JOANN. It was only $1.99 a yd and I used my teacher discount so for 2 yards it was under $5.
Decide on Your Spot
As you know a garland needs something to hang from. My gorgeous green shutters from one of my faves, Brooke at Brooklyn Finds and Designs, were in need of some love and attention between them. They seemed a bit bare ever since I have taken down our Christmas tree and I figured a fun garland of sorts would do the trick!
Mix and Match Books
Now that you have your spot grab your jute and books and lay them out so you can visually see how to arrange them. I found the middle of the pages and slipped each over the jute. Then I spread them out evenly and ended up using and odd number of books. Three large books and two small books. I love mixing and matching and enjoyed that I could do whatever looked good visually for me. Also, since this isn’t permanent it makes it easy to change out books!
Getting to Work
Next, I left the books in their order on the floor and removed the jute webbing. I grabbed my staple gun, jute webbing and attached it to the top of my shutters. Using the staple gun helped make the jute garland tighter which definitely helped with the weight of the books.
Then I carefully added the books, distributed their weight and trimmed the jute so the sides looked equal. P.S.- Isn’t this scroll from Smallwood Home just wonderful? I think it would look great in my classroom too! I’m not sure they still have it but you can check out their other amazing and inspirational art!
DIY Book Garland
That’s it! Such a fun and easy way to create a DIY book garland. It honestly took me all of 10 minutes to complete!
